American Psychological Association Launches New Databases

American Psychological Association Launches New Databases

The initial release of PsycBOOKS will include over 600 books, with more than 10,000 individual chapters, published by APA and over 1,500 entries from the Encyclopedia of Psychology, co-published by APA and Oxford University Press, as well as a selection of archival books from other publishers. The file will also be released at that time for loading by other vendors.

The PsycCRITIQUES database of book reviews in psychology will replace APA’s bimonthly print journal, Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books. According to Beebe, it will provide major enhancements, very current reviews, and much more content. The migration to electronic will take place between September 2004, when the database goes live, and December 2004, when the final print issue will be published.

APA also announced the offering of extended free trials, through Sept. 30, 2004, of the PsycEXTRA gray literature database on APA’s PsycNET search system. PsycEXTRA will also soon be available via EBSCOhost. PsycEXTRA is a database of the “gray literature” in psychology and related behavioral fields, providing access to relevant material published outside traditional peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books.

In addition to abstracts, citations, and full indexing, PsycEXTRA also includes full text for many of the records. Beebe said it currently includes about 43,000 documents comprising about 100,000 pages of full text. By fall there should be 50,000 to 60,000 documents.
