Problem with Scopus Records

Dear Librarian,

In the past two weeks, as a part of our initiative of loading pre-1996 articles to enrich Scopus content, a large number of articles from Elsevier journals were loaded erroneously into Scopus with incorrect publication year and incomplete source title information.

As a result of this, an incorrect publishing year of 2007 and 2008 has been assigned to these records and only limited source information is available, namely journal title and page numbers. Because of the incomplete information, the mechanism that is used to remove duplicate articles hasn't worked properly either. As a consequence, the records are incorrectly appearing in your search alerts as well.

A solution to resolve this issue is already in place and we expect the records with the incorrect information to be removed from Scopus by the end of next week.

New Product Announcement-->Post War Europe: Refugees, Exile and Resettlement (History, Strategic Studies, Social History)

Post-war Europe: Refugees, Exile and Resettlement 1945-1950

This online archive delivers essential primary sources for the study and understanding of the challenges facing the European peoples in the aftermath of World War II. It covers the politics and administration of the refugee crisis in Europe after World War II as well as the day-to-day survival of the refugees themselves.

Although the War in Europe ended officially in May 1945, the struggle continued for the millions of homeless people who had been displaced as a result of military action, deportation into labour or concentration camps, or local racism and discrimination or the relocation of national borders. The burden of the refugee problem taxed the Allied governments and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) relief groups in their attempts to administer, feed and house a moving people searching for their lost families and a permanent home.

A rapid repatriation programme was organised but many Displaced Persons ("DPs") could not or would not return to their homelands. Emigration programmes struggled against the reluctance of nations outside Europe to assist in the resolution of this humanitarian catastrophe.

Here is evidence for both the macro political issues and the day-to-day survival of the DPs themselves:

* The role of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Commission
* The international response to the refugee crisis in Europe
* Life in the DP camps
* The rise of Zionism and determination to secure a Jewish homeland in Palestine
* The Soviet attitude to refugees from Eastern Europe and the breakdown in US/Soviet relations
* Reports and statistics on refugees by country

Post-War Europe is an essential resource for:

* World War II Studies
* Displaced Persons and Refugee Studies
* Holocaust and Jewish Studies
* Post-War History of Germany, Eastern Europe, Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy

New Product Announcement-->Iraq 1914-1974 (History, Strategic Studies)

Iraq, 1914-1974

The Middle East Online series delivers a central resource of primary source materials covering the political history of the Middle East in the 20th Century.

Based on British Government and other files in the UK national archives, the series makes a major contribution to research and teaching of Middle East Studies, the workings of diplomacy, of conflict resolution and peace-keeping.

Iraq 1914-1974, offers a broad range of original source material from the Foreign Office, Colonial Office, War Office and Cabinet Papers covering the period from the Anglo-Indian landing in Basra in 1914 through the British Mandate in Iraq of 1920-32 to the rise of Saddam Hussein in 1974. Here major policy statements and other working documents are set out in context, the minor documents and marginalia revealing the workings of the mandate administration, diplomacy, treaties, oil and arms dealing. Photographs and colour maps, as well as contemporary film, help bring this vital strand of modern history to life.

The Introduction and newly-commissioned essays by leading scholars offer an insight into key themes: they provide direct links to the documents mentioned and a means of easy access for students unfamiliar with the original materials.

Topics covered include:

* The British administration in Baghdad
* Gertrude Bell, advisor to the British administration, in both reports and memos
* The Arab Uprising of 1920
* The Cold War and Soviet intervention in Iraq
* Kurdish unrest and the war in Kurdistan
* Oil concessions and oil exploration
* The Rise of Ba’athism and Saddam Hussein
* Iran-Iraq relations

New Product Announcement-->17th - 18th Century Burney collection Newspapers

17th-18th century Burney Collection newspapers

The newspapers, pamphlets, and books gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media. The present digital collection, that helps chart the development of the concept of 'news' and 'newspapers' and the "free press", totals almost 1 million pages and contains approximately 1,270 titles. Many of the Burney newspapers are well known, but many pamphlets and broadsides also included have remained largely hidden. Newly digitized, all Burney treasures are now fully text-searchable in Gale Digital Collection.

Newspaper images can be magnified for easier reading or reduced for on screen navigation. You can save and print article images, create persistent links and email them to others. When trying to print entire newspaper pages, you will need to tile them to make them legible given the differing paper size between newsprint and common office paper sizes.

New Product Announcement-->19th Century British Newspapers (History, Social History, Political Science)

19th century British Library newspapers

The 19th Century British Library Newspapers collection contains full runs of 48 newspapers specially selected by the British Library to best represent nineteenth century Britain. This new collection includes national and regional newspapers, as well as those from both established country or university towns and the new industrial powerhouses of the manufacturing Midlands, as well as Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Special attention was paid to include newspapers that helped lead particular political or social movements such as Reform, Chartism, and Home Rule. The penny papers aimed at the working and clerical classes are also present in the collection.

Helen Clarke wrote: Our trial on this product is part of our search for a replacement for Factiva as our key source of current events/news sources, we will also be testing Academic Universe (now with Globe and Mail).

So take a look and leave any comments. Also if you have faculty that you think are interested in this type of product and/or use Factiva, let them know about the trial.

Justine Wheeler wrote: Hi Helen,

We use Factiva quite heavily in the Business Library. Why are looking to replace it?

We want something that can support direct links to the journal/newspaper from the catalogue/A-Z list.

As well, feedback from staff is that Factiva is a truly deeply ugly interface and we'd like something a bit easier for folks to use.

However, Factiva does have significantly more sources than either Academic Universe or WorldNews, the other main options.

Personally, I think we will go with Academic Universe, which has the Globe and Mail and supports direct links, but Access WorldNews is the third main contender and worth a whirl.
